Mackworth Island can be reached on foot or by auto across a quarter mile causeway. This scenic hundred-acre island features parking and a walking path around the entire island that affords visitors sweeping 360 degree views of Casco Bay – a true Maine experience!
Woods Road Community Forest is located on Woods Road, within easy walking distance just north of the Woodlands neighborhood entrance. WRCF is the oldest forest stand in Falmouth and one of the oldest in southern Maine. Many of the pine, hemlock and spruce trees growing here are over 100 years of age. This is a great place to take the dog, cross country ski or snowshoe, or just enjoy a quiet walk in the woods.
Gilsland Farm Audubon Center is Maine Audubon’s headquarters. This 65-acre sanctuary has more than two miles of trails winding along a pond and through woods, meadow, orchard and a salt marsh.
River Point Conservation Area borders the Presumpscot River and both the East and West Branch of the Piscataqua River. It abuts the Falmouth Crossing Shopping Center on ME Routes 26/100 in Falmouth, it is an excellent place for birding and wildlife observation, and offers easy access for fishing.
Falmouth Nature Preserve is a wonderful place for winter snowshoeing and skiing. The park welcomes dogs on leash and is open from dawn to dusk. Five well-marked dirt trails wind through a mixed forest of hemlock, beech, maple, and yellow and white birch.
Pine Grove Preserve is a grand, 27-acre, mature pine forest with several connecting trails and war monuments. A nature walk with 12 interpretive stations lies in the center of the preserve behind the Pine Grove School. Trails vary from grassy paths to narrow paths covered with pine needles.
Falmouth Community Park is an amazing town resource encompassing 160 acres that include an active farm, open fields, forests, multi-purpose fields, running fields, and two ball fields and nearly four miles of maintained hiking trails. Dogs can be off leash, and the trails are shared by runners, cross country skiers, people on snowshoes and mountain bikers.
